Our History of Farming, Care of Our Herd and Customer Philosophy

Being 3rd generation farmers, our family has been farming since 1924. Our family's first farm is a dairy farm in Pine Bush, New York. Throughout many years of dairy farming it was common practice to feed the cows our own grown grains, and concentrated grains supplied by large feed corporations. We never really knew what was in the purchased feed. In addition, it was also common practice to use pesticides and herbicides to control weeds and insects, and to enhance the growth of the crop being fed to the animals. Our dairy cows were constantly in veterinarian care, and we now know why.

Eugene and Stephen always had a dream of operating a beef farm, and finally in 1997, they purchased a 285 acre farm in Montgomery, New York. It was an operating horse farm and a perfect choice, since horse farms don't usually use pesticides, herbicides, etc.; and they wanted the land to be free of any such chemicals. They started their beef operation known as Bettinger Bluff Farm, with only 9 animals. Now, fourteen years later, they have hundreds of cows in their herd.

The farm is fenced and laid out to maximize the fresh air, all-natural food, and overall health of the cows, which have virtually free rein over the premises. Cows rotate from fresh pastures to fresh pastures during the spring, summer and fall seasons. During the winter, feeding areas are set up for the cows, and they are fed haylage (which is fermented high-moisture grass) and hay (which you know is the more common dry grass). The farm does its own harvesting of the haylage and hay to ensure the consistent, high quality of the cows' food. The only way you can have a quality product is first, you have to care; and second is to keep watchful eyes on all operations. That's why we are completely self-contained, from feed to finished product.

Fourteen successful years of great herd health is attributed to the simple fact that we do not use any herbicides, pesticides, growth hormones, antibiotics, or any other chemicals. There have been hundreds of new births over the years, and to date, there has never been the need for a veterinarian's service on the farm due to poor health or sickness. This in itself tells us that our animals are receiving everything they need from their all-natural diet and proper care. The best thing that we have learned in all our farming experience is that eating healthy is the first step to being healthy. All this is done so that we can offer you the finest, choice, all-natural, grass-fed beef anywhere; because, most of all, we care about our customers!
